The Sunrise

Set in 1972 Cyprus, "The Sunrise" follows Aphriditi Papacostas and her husband Savvas as they transform their luxurious hotel into a haven for Europe’s elite amid rising tensions between Greeks and Turks. When a coup d'état in Greece triggers a Turkish invasion, the once-glamorous city of Famagusta descends into chaos, forcing the Papacostas to flee to refugee camps. Only two families—a Turkish Cypriot family, the Özkans, and a Greek Cypriot family, the Georgious—remain, seeking shelter in the deserted hotel as they confront illness, hunger, and deeply ingrained prejudices while fighting for survival. This poignant tale captures the stark contrast between the opulence of the 1970s Mediterranean and the brutal realities of war.
