In the oppressive atmosphere of Florence in 1691, young artist Gaetano Zummo flees his hometown of Siracusa, navigating a world where knowledge is hoarded and art, sex, and power dominate. As he crafts haunting models of the plague's victims, he receives a complex commission from Cosimo III, the Medici ruler, drawing him into an entangled relationship with Faustina, the apothecary's daughter, who harbors a dangerous secret.
