In August 1862, the Dakota nation, facing years of broken treaties and encroachments on their lands, gathered under leader Little Crow to decide their course of action. Despite his counsel for caution, anger led them into a six-week conflict with settlers and federal troops along the Minnesota frontier. Following the uprising's suppression, a military commission found over 300 Dakota warriors guilty of murder, leading to President Lincoln's intervention to spare the lives of many, though the aftermath resulted in a devastated way of life for the Dakota, significant loss, and forced relocation.
