My Lai

On March 16, 1968, American soldiers from Charlie Company launched a "search and destroy" mission in the Son Tinh district of South Vietnam, leading to the tragic My Lai Massacre, where over 500 unarmed villagers were killed. Initially shrouded in secrecy, the truth began to emerge when witnesses, including a helicopter pilot and a door gunner, spoke out against the official narrative of the events. Lieutenant William Calley’s admission of guilt, combined with an exposé by journalist Seymour Hersh, sparked widespread outrage and prompted inquiries into the massacre and the subsequent cover-up.
