Naive young Masha Mironova arrives in early 20th-century Moscow, eager to escape her provincial roots and embrace a daring new identity as Columbine. She becomes entwined with a group called the Lovers of Death, who hold seances to predict the next person destined to take their life, leading to a troubling wave of suicides. As media hysteria escalates, the gentleman detective Erast Fandorin, accompanied by his Japanese sidekick, investigates the troubling events while attempting to dissuade the group's members from their fatal fascination. The stakes rise as Columbine awaits her own signs from death, leaving Fandorin racing against time to intervene.
