Clomayne's Clerk

Mary Rackham, born in Norwich in 1848, emerged as a significant figure in East Anglian literature after her marriage in 1871 to farmer Fairman Joseph Mann. Engaging deeply with her community through workhouse visits, her observations inspired a rich body of work that includes thirty-three novels, hundreds of short stories, and fourteen plays, often reflecting the stark realities of rural life in Norfolk. Her first novel, The Parish of Hilby, published in 1883, marked the beginning of a prolific three-decade career. Mann passed away in 1929, leaving behind a legacy celebrated for its authentic portrayal of poverty and resilience.
