Ben Pitcher's Elly

Mary Rackham, born in Norwich in 1848 and later married to farmer Fairman Joseph Mann, became a notable author after engaging with her community through workhouse visits in Shropham, Norfolk. She began her writing career in the 1880s, publishing her first novel, "The Parish of Hilby," in 1883, which received critical acclaim. Over three decades, Mann produced thirty-three novels, numerous short stories, and fourteen plays, focusing on the authentic portrayal of poverty and rural life in Norfolk, particularly through the lens of the fictional town of Dulditch. She passed away in 1929, leaving a legacy as a significant figure in East Anglian literature, with her grave marked by a carved open book inscribed with a thoughtful epitaph.
