"Nightmare Abbey" is a Gothic satire that critiques the romantic movement of its time, exploring themes of misanthropy and transcendental philosophy through a cast of exaggerated characters based on real historical figures. The story follows Christopher Glowry, a melancholic widower living in a dilapidated mansion with his son, alongside a collection of similarly dark-minded visitors. Among them is Mr. Hilary, a contrastingly cheerful brother-in-law, and Reverend Mr. Larynx, who adapts to the somber atmosphere.
