He gained fame with his novel "The Mystery of a Hansom Cab," a Victorian detective story that predated Sherlock Holmes and inspired Arthur Conan Doyle. Over his prolific career, Hume authored more than 130 novels, primarily in the genres of detective stories, thrillers, and mysteries, while maintaining a deeply private life. He passed away in 1932 in Essex and was buried in an unmarked grave.
