Glorious Courage

"Glorious Courage" by historian Sarah Kay Bierle presents a comprehensive examination of Confederate officer John Pelham, untangling the myth from the reality surrounding his life and legacy. Venerated for his bravery during the Civil War, Pelham became a Southern icon following his death, yet his portrayal has often been romanticized by admirers. Drawing on primary and secondary sources, Bierle chronicles Pelham’s journey from Alabama to the military academy at West Point, as well as his significant contributions to horse artillery, while acknowledging the complexities and flaws that defined him as a person.
