The Spectre of Tappington

Richard Harris Barham, born in Canterbury, England, in 1788, overcame a childhood tragedy and a physical handicap to become a dedicated scholar. Initially studying Law at Oxford, he shifted his focus to a religious life, eventually serving as a minor canon at St. Paul's Cathedral and a priest in the King's Chapel Royal. Barham gained literary acclaim for his contributions to Blackwood's Magazine and for the popular 'The Ingoldsby Legends', published in 1837. He passed away in London at the age of 56 after enduring a prolonged illness.
