Mayer André Marcel Schwob, born on August 23, 1867, in France, emerged from a cultured Jewish family and developed a fascination for the macabre, influenced by authors like Poe and Stevenson. After excelling in his education, he became a prolific journalist and writer in the 1890s, producing numerous short story collections and establishing himself as a key figure in Symbolism and a precursor to Surrealism. Despite battling a chronic illness that plagued him for much of his life, Schwob continued to write and travel, ultimately passing away at the age of 37 on February 26, 1905. His literary contributions include over a hundred works, spanning various genres and forms.
