Born in Glasgow in 1849, Robert Barr emigrated to Canada with his family at a young age, where he pursued education and a career in teaching. By 1874, he had become the headmaster of a school and began writing travel and humorous articles. Eventually relocating to London, he transitioned into fiction writing, gaining acclaim and becoming a prominent figure in the literary world, co-founding 'The Idler' magazine. Barr's diverse body of work includes crime novels, parodic stories, and witty short tales, reflecting his versatile writing style until his passing in 1912.
