The Narrative of Sojourner Truth

Sojourner Truth’s autobiographical narrative details her life as a slave in Upstate New York and her journey to becoming an influential abolitionist and women's rights advocate. Born around 1797 and emancipated in 1827, she moved to New York City and engaged with various religious groups. By 1843, she was an itinerant preacher, spending much of her time in Northampton, Massachusetts. Despite being illiterate, she dictated her story, published in 1850, with a new edition later compiled by her friend Frances Titus in the 1870s, which included "the Book of Life."
