"Evangeline: A Tale of Acadie" is an epic poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, published in 1847, that tells the poignant story of an Acadian girl named Evangeline as she searches for her lost love, Gabriel, during the expulsion of the Acadians. Inspired by Longfellow's friend Nathaniel Hawthorne, the poem employs dactylic hexameter and has garnered both acclaim and criticism for its historical accuracy. It became Longfellow's most famous work and has played a significant role in shaping Acadian history and identity. Despite its popularity, recent scholarship has illuminated the poem's historical inaccuracies and the complexities surrounding the expulsion.
