The Battle of Fredericksburg

In December 1862, the Battle of Fredericksburg unfolded in and around Fredericksburg, Virginia, involving the Union Army of the Potomac led by Major General Burnside and the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia under General Robert E. Lee. This confrontation was marked by the Union's unsuccessful frontal assaults against well-guarded Confederate positions on the heights, resulting in Union casualties exceeding those of the Confederates by more than twofold.
