In 1930s Mississippi, Mary Johnson longs for freedom from her oppressive surroundings and dreams of a vibrant life in the city with her musician boyfriend, Mason Carter. When her parents arrange a marriage with a wealthy preacher, Mary elopes with Mason in search of a better future.
