The Oresteia, a tragedy by Aeschylus from the fifth century BCE, unfolds in three parts: Agamemnon, The Libation Bearers, and The Eumenides. Following the fall of Troy, King Agamemnon returns home only to be murdered by his wife Clytemnestra, who seeks revenge for their daughter Iphigenia's sacrifice. This act of vengeance sparks a cycle of further violence, culminating in their son Orestes avenging his father's death. As the only surviving example of an ancient Greek theater trilogy, The Oresteia won first prize at the Dionysia festival in 458 BCE.
