Cabbages and Kings

In his only novel, O. Henry intertwines a series of stories set in the fictional Central American country of Anchuria, a banana republic marked by rampant crime and political unrest. Inspired by Lewis Carroll's ballad, the narrative offers a sharp satire on contemporary politics and social issues, while ultimately affirming a middle-class morality where love triumphs, poverty is vanquished, and virtue is rewarded.
