In the 1950s, Ruby Walker, a celebrated blues singer from Mississippi, finds her life shattered after being convicted of murdering her lover and producer, Billy Lyons. While incarcerated, she receives letters from Nick Travers, a blues historian at Tulane University, who offers to investigate the truth behind Lyons's final hours in exchange for an interview.
