In the early 19th century, John Humphrey Noyes led a radical religious movement during the Second Great Awakening, establishing the Oneida Community in rural New York, which promoted equality of the sexes and a unique concept of "complex marriage." As the community sought to live free of sin through God's grace, their unconventional practices drew both fervent followers and eventual criticism. Disbanded in 1880, the community evolved into a successful joint-stock company, transforming its legacy into a leading silverware manufacturer.
