William Austin, born on March 2, 1778, in Lunenburg, Massachusetts, embarked on a diverse career after graduating from Harvard College. He served as an Unitarian chaplain on the USS Constitution before transitioning to legal studies in London under the mentorship of Alexander Hamilton. Austin became a prominent figure in Boston politics and is well-known for his contributions to literature, particularly for the popular story "Peter Rugg: The Missing Man," published between 1824 and 1827, which was often mistaken for factual accounts rather than fiction. He passed away on June 27, 1841.
