An Outcast of the People

Bithia Mary Sheppard, an accomplished Irish author and horsewoman, was born in County Roscommon and initially gained recognition through her equestrian skills with the Kildare Hunt. After marrying John Stokes Croker, the couple spent 14 years in India, where Bithia began her writing career at the age of 33, ultimately producing 42 novels and 7 volumes of short stories, including notable ghost and supernatural tales. Her works provide insightful observations of the Empire, reflecting the complexities of her time. Bithia passed away in London in 1920, leaving behind a rich literary legacy.
