Bithia Mary Sheppard, born in County Roscommon, Ireland, was the only daughter of an Anglican rector and showcased her talents early on as a noted horsewoman. After marrying John Stokes Croker in 1871, the couple spent 14 years in India, where Bithia began her writing career at the age of 33. She authored 42 novels and numerous short stories, including acclaimed ghost and supernatural tales that reflect the complexities of the British Empire. Following her husband's death in 1911, Bithia passed away in London in 1920.
