The Poetry of James Weldon Johnson

James Weldon Johnson, born in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1871, was a multifaceted figure whose contributions spanned education, literature, and civil rights. After graduating from Atlanta University in 1894, he played a significant role in Theodore Roosevelt's presidential campaign and subsequently served as a U.S. consul in Venezuela and Nicaragua. As a pivotal member of the NAACP, Johnson organized critical demonstrations against racial violence and significantly influenced the Harlem Renaissance with his literary works, including "50 Years and Other Poems" and "God's Trombones." An esteemed educator and one of the first African American professors at NYU, his life ended tragically in 1938.
