Her Letters

Katherine O'Flaherty, later known as Kate Chopin, was born on February 8, 1850, in St. Louis, Missouri, and began writing while attending the Sacred Heart Academy. After marrying Oscar Chopin and raising six children, she faced immense personal tragedy and financial difficulties following her husband's death in 1882. Despite early struggles and criticism for her bold themes addressing women's rights and societal issues, Chopin's short stories garnered national attention in the 1890s. It wasn't until the 1970s, amidst the feminist movement, that her literary contributions were rediscovered, establishing her legacy as a significant American author.
