A Shameful Affair

Katherine O'Flaherty, known as Kate Chopin, was born on February 8, 1850, in St. Louis, Missouri, and educated at the Sacred Heart Academy. After marrying Oscar Chopin and raising six children, she faced significant personal challenges following her husband's death in 1882, leading her to focus on writing. Despite initial criticism for addressing controversial themes in her work, Chopin gained national recognition for her short stories in the 1890s. Although her literary contributions were largely overlooked for much of the 20th century, a resurgence of interest in her writings emerged in the 1970s, solidifying her place as one of America's great authors.
