Katherine O'Flaherty, known as Kate Chopin, was born on February 8, 1850, in St. Louis, Missouri, and developed a passion for writing and reading early in her life. After marrying Oscar Chopin and raising six children in Louisiana, she faced profound challenges following her husband's death in 1882, which left her in debt and struggling with depression. Despite the controversy surrounding her themes of women's rights and interracial relationships, her short stories gained national attention in the early 1890s, though they were often met with harsh criticism.
