A Lonely Ride

Francis Bret Harte, born on August 25, 1836, in Albany, New York, developed a passion for literature early in life, publishing his first poem at just 11 years old. After his family relocated to California, he found inspiration in the stories of the Old West and the Gold Rush, becoming a key figure in advancing the short story genre. Throughout his career, he explored various forms of writing, including poetry, plays, and magazine articles, achieving significant fame and monetary success. Harte's literary journey led him across the United States and Europe, where he continued to write until his death from throat cancer on May 5, 1902.
