A Jersey Centenarian

Francis Bret Harte, born on August 25, 1836, in Albany, New York, was a pioneering author who found inspiration in California's diverse experiences as a miner, teacher, and journalist. Beginning his writing career at a young age, he rose to fame by crafting compelling short stories that captured the essence of the Old West and the Gold Rush, helping to elevate the genre. Despite facing challenges in his later years, including a diminishing audience as he moved to Europe, Harte continued to produce poetry, plays, and various writings until his death from throat cancer on May 5, 1902.
