The Diary of a Plain Girl

Amy Levy, born in 1861 in London to a wealthy Anglo-Jewish family, emerged as a prominent writer early in life, publishing her first poem at just fourteen. Educated at Brighton High School and briefly at Newnham College, Cambridge, she became the first Jewish student there. Her notable works, including the novel Romance of a Shop and the controversial Reuben Sachs, explore themes of Jewish identity and feminist concerns. Despite her literary success and vibrant friendships, Levy battled major depression and deafness, ultimately leading to her tragic death by suicide at the age of twenty-seven.
