The Passionate Shepherd to His Love and Her Reply

"The Passionate Shepherd to His Love," a renowned poem by Christopher Marlowe published posthumously in 1599, is celebrated for its evocative opening line and serves as a key example of the pastoral style in late Renaissance British poetry. Written in structured iambic tetrameter, the poem consists of several stanzas crafted from rhyming couplets, making it a popular choice for educational settings. It also sparked a notable response from Walter Raleigh, titled "The Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd," which contrasts the youthful idealism of Marlowe's work with Raleigh's more cynical perspective on love.
