Home to Harlem

Claude McKay's Home to Harlem, published in 1928, captures the vibrant life of Harlem during the Harlem Renaissance through the experiences of Jake, a Southern-born longshoreman, and Ray, an educated Haitian immigrant. Using innovative Black dialects, McKay explores themes of racial identity, societal change, and the complexities of Black life in a rapidly evolving landscape filled with both joy and prejudice. The novel incited debate among contemporary Black critics, becoming the first commercial bestseller by a Black novelist in the United States and offering a raw portrayal of modern Black working-class life.
