In "Men at Arms," the first novel of Evelyn Waugh's Sword of Honor trilogy, we follow Guy Crouchback as he eagerly commissions into the Royal Corps of Halberdiers, hoping to engage in the excitement of war. Instead, his experience is overshadowed by the reality of military life, culminating in a misadventure on the West African coastline that tarnishes his reputation. This insightful comedy offers a unique perspective on the absurdities of modern warfare, setting the stage for the subsequent novels in the trilogy.
