The Great Poets: John Clare

John Clare, often referred to as the Peasant Poet, is a once-overlooked Romantic poet celebrated for his poignant depictions of rural England's natural landscape prior to the Industrial Revolution. His works, rich in sensitivity and pantheistic themes, stand alongside those of Wordsworth. Despite his remarkable talent, Clare's life was marked by profound struggles with poverty and mental health, with some of his greatest poems created during his time in an asylum.
