The Prisoner of Chillon

In Lord Byron's narrative poem, written after his visit to the Château of Chillon in 1816, the story unfolds through the voice of François Bonivard, a 16th-century Swiss monk and patriot imprisoned in its dungeons. Through 14 stanzas, Bonivard recounts the tragic fates of his family while expressing his own sufferings and the flickers of hope inspired by the beauty just beyond his confinement. This dramatic monologue captures the depths of despair and the enduring power of hope amidst darkness.
