In the wake of the largest oil spill in history from a crashed supertanker in San Francisco Bay, a multinational oil company deploys an untested “designer microbe” intended to consume petrocarbons and mitigate environmental impact. However, as the microbe unexpectedly propagates through the air, vehicles across the Bay Area start running out of gas, leading to alarming consequences. Soon, the repercussions escalate when all plastic materials begin to dissolve, revealing a catastrophic oversight that threatens the world.
