In 1972 New York City, Catherine Velis, a math and chess enthusiast working as a computer expert, is drawn into a mysterious adventure after a fortune teller warns her of danger. Before departing for a new assignment in Algeria, she is approached by an antiques dealer seeking someone to retrieve pieces of an ancient chess service. Meanwhile, in 1790, young novices Mireille de Rémy and her cousin Valentine rebel against their cloistered life at Montglane Abbey, aiming to scatter the powerful Montglane Chess Service pieces hidden within, ensuring their secret isn't misused during the tumult of the French Revolution.
