Strange Stories (Annotated)

This collection features sixteen short stories by Grant Allen from 1884, blending Victorian thrillers, ghost stories, and satire to explore themes of judgment, science, and societal norms. Despite Allen’s own modest disclaimer about venturing into fiction, the tales are both sensational and thought-provoking, addressing questions about human examination and authority. An included critical afterword provides insightful analysis of each story, highlighting both the period’s biases and Allen’s literary experimentation. Overall, the book offers a fascinating glimpse into Victorian-era curiosity, skepticism, and social critique.
