The Brick Moon

This 1869 story presents the first vision of an artificial satellite, initially conceived as a celestial landmark to solve navigational challenges for sailors. The plot follows a group of Massachusetts undergraduates who design and plan to launch a massive spherical station into orbit, only for a weather catastrophe to send the moon into space, leading to unexpected survival and adaptation among its inhabitants. Recognized as a pioneering example of hard sci-fi, the narrative influenced later works by Arthur C. Clarke and others, featuring themes of space stations and communication across the cosmos.
