The Improv

In 1963, Budd Friedman opened the Improvisation, a coffee house for Broadway performers in Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen, with the goal of making a living and building industry connections. The venue quickly became popular, attracting legendary celebrities and future stars alike, and eventually revolutionized comedy by pioneering live stand-up performances in a continuous format. The Improv’s success set the stage for the modern comedy club scene.
