In 1984, Gregory Lee Johnson protested against Reagan administration policies by burning an American flag in front of Dallas City Hall. He was tried, convicted, and sentenced under a Texas law banning flag desecration, but his conviction was later reversed by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, leading the case to reach the Supreme Court.
