Alé Aragón, a powerless Deficient in a world of genetically enhanced peers, faces constant ridicule and hardship, but his closest companion, Yalamba, brings him comfort through her living artwork. When Yalamba disappears amid an ability-related hate crime, Alé teams up with other outcasts to uncover the truth behind her disappearance and a series of murders targeting gifted individuals. As he navigates danger and uncertainty, Alé must confront his fears to solve the mystery and rescue his friend, all without any special abilities of his own.
