Tom Brodzinski's attempt to quit smoking goes awry when a final cigarette he discards causes an accident involving Reggie Lincoln, an elderly man from a remote desert tribe. As a result, Tom faces legal repercussions that intertwine local law with the customs of Mrs. Lincoln's native community. To make amends, he must undertake a journey into the harsh interior of an unusual island continent, leaving his family behind.
