The Vanished Diamond (The Southern Star)

"The Vanished Diamond" by Jules Verne follows a young French engineer in South Africa who must solve the theft of a legendary diamond to clear his name and secure his romance. While presenting a detailed portrayal of diamond geology and mining, the novel is rooted in colonial perspectives that depict Africa as resources to be exploited and African characters through stereotypical lenses. Modern readers may find its colonial framework and portrayal of African characters problematic, reflecting the era's uncritical acceptance of imperialism.
