The Neanderthals

In August 1856, the discovery of ancient bones in a German cave by mine workers led to the identification of what would become known as Neanderthals, a finding initially met with skepticism by the scientific community. Over time, subsequent discoveries and research revealed that Neanderthals were not primitive or brutish, but possessed a complex culture—and that many modern humans carry Neanderthal DNA. This intriguing story highlights how our understanding of human evolution has evolved from early disbelief to a recognition of our deep connection with these ancient relatives.
