Jerzy Kosiński (1933–1991) was a Polish-American novelist who emigrated to the United States in 1957 and began his writing career with nonfiction books published under the pseudonym Joseph Novak. He gained international recognition for the novels The Painted Bird, Steps, and Being There; Steps won the 1969 National Book Award, and Kosiński later adapted Being There into its acclaimed 1979 film version. He also taught writing at Wesleyan, Princeton, and Yale and served as president of the American chapter of PEN.
