Gaius Valerius Catullus (c. 84–54 BC) was a Roman neoteric poet from Verona who established his literary career in Rome among prominent intellectuals of the late Republic. His surviving collection of 116 poems combines intimate lyric poetry about love and friendship with satire, invective, elegy, wedding poetry, and mythological narratives, adapting Greek forms and meters to Latin with exceptional directness and emotional intensity.
