J. B. West (1912–1983) was a White House staff member who served as assistant chief usher from 1941 and chief usher from 1957 to 1969, working with six presidents and their families. With journalist Mary Lynn Kotz, he wrote the bestselling memoir Upstairs at the White House: My Life with the First Ladies, first published in 1973, offering an insider’s account of presidential household life and major White House events.
