St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori (1696–1787) was an Italian Catholic bishop, theologian, and prolific spiritual writer who began publishing seriously in the 1740s. He produced more than 100 works, including Moral Theology, The Glories of Mary, The Great Means of Prayer, Preparation for Death, devotional treatises, sermons, and works on Catholic moral, dogmatic, and ascetical theology. His writings, originally published chiefly in Italian and Latin, became influential classics of Catholic spiritual literature.
